This question raises at least two issues which have to be addressed. One is friendship, and the other is relationship. One can exist without the other, but it will be better if both can exist in a mutually beneficial way. Let us use an example. Your neighbour or colleague in the office is always envious and uses every opportunity to sabotage your efforts and undermine your reputation; what do you do? Can you still remain friendly to such a person? Can you maintain a relationship with him or her?
To the first part of the question, the answer is yes. You owe it a duty to remain friendly with all persons you come across, including those who are hostile and mean towards you. Your disposition of friendship and love elevates you spiritually and insulates you from falling to their low level of degeneration. It also helps you maintain a clear gaze and a strong connection with centres of pure love and power, obtaining thereby High and Luminous guidance on how to respond in wisdom to their low level antics.
To remain friendly and show love to those that antagonise you equally ensures you do not attract negative karma to yourself, rather you learn in the experience it calls forth, liberate yourself and move ahead, freed from whatever you may have done in the past to warrant the antagonism in the first place. It is in this sense that the words of Christ ‘Love your enemies…’ should be understood.
To be friendly, however, does not imply or suggest that you should be weak and docile. If the circumstances of the hostility require you to respond with firm and severe actions, you must carry this out with boldness and full attention. That way, you may even be helping the other person more, in that he or she may change and become a better person. The only caution, though, is that you do not apply your severe actions with a heart of vengeance and hatred. It has to be done in love, as well.
Then when it comes to the second aspect of the question; concerning continuing to maintain relationship, each individual has to decide for himself depending on the peculiar situation. Relationship is a matter of personal choice. Every relationship, however, is adjudged to be of value in the reckoning of the Laws of Creation when it is genuine and wells up from true love; and is not selfish and coldly calculating. Any relationship which is selfish and or one sided is baseless before the Laws of God.
