What duties go with material wealth?

A human being is considered as materially wealthy when, compared with others, he has a very substantial accumulation of material means over which he has the prerogative of control and utilisation. These material means could be properties and other things that could be valued in monetary terms.

All things great and small belong to God in absolute terms. Material forms in all their variety have taken on form in God’s Creation, therefore His sovereignty covers and governs all things. We all should bear this in mind whenever we have in our possession and under our control such life-facilitating means that can be used and appropriated for the good of mankind.

What is very obvious in life on earth is that our personal conditions and circumstances can never be the same in terms of opportunities and attainment of goals. Therefore communal life on earth requires that we learn how to give unselfishly and also how to receive with gratitude and appreciation when we are recipients of help and understanding from the good disposition of others.

The Will of God is that all things that He has made should be used, deployed and appropriated for up-building and activities that move in the direction of the spiritual progress of mankind. Material wealth comes under this. The human being who is endowed with material wealth should see himself as, and indeed is, a custodian of God’s grace. He has not been materially endowed because he is in anyway very special as a human being before God. Rather he has a golden opportunity granted him to serve God and His Will in connection with the dispensing of God’s manifold grace of his fellow-men.

One thing should be very clear to our [readers]: any human being that proves to be a good steward of God’s grace stands to reap abundant spiritual blessings for his faithful stewardship. On the other hand, unfaithful stewardship brings a spiritual burden arising from insensitivity to the pain and suffering of others, lack of consideration for the rights of others and lack of compassion.

Being endowed with material wealth is to be called to the duty of service and love. God, in His wisdom, ties every endowment He has granted to a specific goal which such material means are to facilitate. It is only desirable that such an endowed one fulfils.
