“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” – what is man meant to understand by this statement of the Lord Jesus Christ?

It is good this question has come up for clarification. The first point to state is that the Lord Jesus Christ meant all His teachings to be understood in their spiritual sense. Indeed also every reader of the scriptures should seek to interpret the words solely in their spiritual sense and thereby draw the lasting lessons they contain.

The statement of Christ “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”, like so many of His other statements, is not well understood by many. Many assumed that Jesus Christ was thereby encouraging poverty, wretchedness and beggarly attitude. Indeed many now take poverty as a virtue, seeking to attract admiration and unqualified sympathy.

The fact is that the “poor in spirit” means and refers to a totally different state of being. Spirit is the eternal the true essence of man, that which does not die with the physical body but exists even after physical death. It is solely for the development and maturity of the spirit that every man has come to the earth. The more mature man’s spirit is the richer also does it become because that means that it has brought to greater use the abundance of its talents. The talents of every man or woman represent the wealth of the person’s spirit. The more each person brings his talents to fuller blossom the richer the person is spiritually and the nearer the person is to the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Therefore when Christ spoke of the poor in spirit He was not in any encouraging physical or material poverty because He was not addressing the intellect or the physical part of man. Rather He was talking about the inner quality of simplicity, humility and unassuming.

The poor in spirit are those who in humility and purity of intuition can attain to the right understanding of the Will of God in Creation and through humble obedience live their lives in accordance with the Laws of God also called the Natural Laws. These are the ones who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
